Risky Business : artist interviews 

Featuring artists in our community where we have a conversation about risk - whether it’s something we experience, a subject in our creative work, or the greater context that we live and work in. The idea for this series was sparked by a conversation with our alumna artist Gwen Charles during one of our meetings to catch up on what we do. As we talked over tea or lunch on topics from what’s happening in our studios, how our work is doing, how our fellow artists are doing, our families, our health, the communities we are part of, communities far and wide, somehow during those conversations about these experiences, and somewhere during discussions on the challenges, achievements and complications in all of them, we came upon the subject of risk.

North Willow attic is an example. Founded on the goal of turning an attic into a venue where artists in our community can experiment with site-specific projects so they can share their vision with their audience, this attic space was founded as a labor of love (isn’t love is the ultimate risk?). While attic operations had been halted from a combination of the covid pandemic, damage from Hurricane Ida, financial problems, medical bills, college bills, we are still endeavoring on finding ways to resume programming. It's a risky business. But in our philosophy, the risk is in not taking that risk.

In the meantime, we're doing these artist interviews so we can share our risky business stories with each other.
